Community Partnership for Improving Traffic Safety
The Wheat Ridge Police Department launched a new campaign entitled Community Partnership for Improving Traffic Safety (CPITS) to address speeding and other concerns in area neighborhoods. The program will offer community members an opportunity to gather with a minimum of five neighbors who share traffic concerns and make a report here.
After the concerns are compiled and reviewed, officers will contact neighborhood groups and schedule a time to meet in order to understand the issues and talk about possible enforcement and calming tactics that may be deployed. Officers can provide a traffic laser to allow residents to estimate speeds and learn about the actual pace of traffic movement in their area.
Initial Evaluation: Once a minimum of five neighbors have met, compiled locations of concern and shared them with WRPD on WhatsUpWheatRidge.com, a member of the Crash and Traffic Team (CATT) will respond and schedule a meeting to begin the process of evaluating the area. If this is a location already known to police, officers will conduct enforcement to educate drivers and issue warnings as well as tickets.
Neighborhood Traffic Management Program (NTMP): The CPITS program will work in collaboration with the NTMP, a long-standing community-driven program that provides traffic calming measures like signage and speed humps for areas identified in studies conducted by the city’s Engineering Division. Residents can be referred to this program during initial conversations with police.
