Stormwater System Maintenance

Project Description

This project addresses critical maintenance needs within Wheat Ridge’s aging stormwater system to reduce flooding risks and protect neighborhoods.

Much of the city’s stormwater infrastructure was installed during the same period and has received limited reinvestment over time. In 2023, several storm sewer failures required emergency repairs, highlighting the need for ongoing maintenance and replacement.

Using 2J funds, the city has already repaired sinkholes and replaced 2,303 feet of storm pipe at eight locations during 2025 and 2026. The city will continue monitoring system conditions and making necessary repairs to improve reliability and reduce future risks. Construction crew replacing stormwater pipe

Community Support

Residents consistently identify infrastructure maintenance as an important city responsibility. In the 2023 Resident Survey, nearly 80% of respondents rated stormwater drainage as essential or very important, while fewer residents were satisfied with the current condition of the system.

In response, the city completed and adopted a Stormwater Master Plan in 2025. The plan was informed by technical analysis and community input and provides a roadmap for future improvements.

Support for this work was further reinforced during engagement for the 2025 City Plan, where 95% of respondents agreed that proactive infrastructure management, including stormwater maintenance, should be a priority for Wheat Ridge.
