Priority Sidewalk Connections
Project Description
This project will design and construct missing sidewalk segments along key pedestrian routes to improve safety, accessibility, and connectivity throughout Wheat Ridge.
Like many communities, Wheat Ridge’s transportation network was originally designed primarily for cars, leaving gaps in the sidewalk system. Over the past two decades, residents have increasingly identified walking access and safety as community priorities. This project addresses those needs by filling critical sidewalk gaps near schools, parks, and other destinations.
Round 1 segments, scheduled for construction in 2026, include:
- Parfet Street (35th Avenue to 3550 Parfet Street)
- I-70 Frontage Road (Holland Street to Garrison Street)
- Harlan Street (32nd Avenue to 35th Avenue)
Round 2 segments, currently in design, include:
- Miller Street (44th Avenue to 48th Avenue)
- Pierce Street (29th Avenue to 44th Avenue)
- 26th Avenue (Oak Street to Paramount Parkway)
Additional segments will be identified as funding becomes available.
Community Support
Improving walking and biking connections has been a community priority for many years. Envision Wheat Ridge, adopted in 2009, identified the need for better multimodal transportation options and led to the city’s first Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan. The plan was updated in 2017 to establish a citywide vision for a connected bicycle and pedestrian network.
Community support for these improvements has continued to grow. In the 2023 Resident Survey, four out of five respondents reported using a bike or pedestrian path during the previous year, while 66% rated the condition of the city’s sidewalks as fair or poor. Similar feedback has been received through the Let’s Talk Resident Engagement Program, the Open Space Management Plan, and other city initiatives.
Most recently, 86% of respondents during engagement for the 2025 City Plan agreed that creating a connected network of pedestrian and bicycle facilities should be a priority for Wheat Ridge.
