Project Update - October 2023

Thank you to everyone who participated in the 35th Avenue Street Improvements project in 2022. More than 240 area residents engaged in the process and provided valuable input. We have analyzed all of your feedback, and City of Wheat Ridge engineers have started designing future street improvements.

City funds were set aside for the improvements, but in order to better meet your needs and wants for the project, we successfully pursued additional funding for the project through the Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG)! These additional funds will address rising construction costs and the level of improvements needed for a significant positive impact on the safety and access of this corridor for all users. Now, environmental and design work will start in fall 2025 with construction taking place after. Stay tuned!

About the Project

Graphics representing walking, biking, wheelchair rolling, and drivingImproving W 35th Avenue between Teller St and Sheridan Blvd has been on the City’s radar for several years. Recent feedback from residents through Let’s Talk East Wheat Ridge reiterated this as a top neighborhood priority. In 2022, more than 240 community members shared their thoughts on potential improvements to W 35th Avenue.

Our Promise to You

We will work with you to better understand your concerns and ideas for this road. We will use community feedback, results of a traffic study, and analysis of what is financially and technically feasible to reach a final design that improves safety for all users on this stretch of W 35th Avenue. We will not be asking for a popular or consensus vote on a final design. We’ll use community feedback to ensure that the final design reflects a broad range of community perspectives.

Project Goals

  • Give residents impacted by any changes to this stretch of W 35th Avenue ample opportunity to weigh in
  • Ensure that the improvements:
    • Enhance safety for those walking or using a wheelchair
    • Enhance safety for those biking
    • Complement existing neighborhood character
    • Improve or maintain existing conditions related to property access
    • Limit impacts to on-street parking
    • Improve or maintain existing conditions related to vehicular traffic flow, emergency access, street cleaning, and snow removal
